The Martin 242 is one of the most enjoyable boats to sail on the market today, from many different perspectives. The local Fleet of 50 boats regularly sees 25 or more on the start line for Wednesday Night races starting in April, with weekend regattas drawing anywhere from 10-25 boats depending on the event. There are also many social events and seminars throughout the year, far more than any other Class in the GVRD. Starting in May, there are introductory races and social events on Thursday nights for those who want to get started in the Class in a more casual manner.
M242 owners also enjoy very cost-effective racing, ranging from lower wet and dry moorage costs relative to other boats, to a restriction on purchases of no more than 2 new sails per year, coupled with a relatively maintenance-free boat given its simple construction, deck, and rigging systems. Most competitive boats can undertake a racing program for less than $5,000 per year, including moorage, insurance, entry fees, sails, and repairs: a very affordable figure. In contrast, some larger race boats in the GVRD can spend many times that amount on just one mainsail.
As an international boat, the M242 has Fleets in Japan, the USA, Alberta, and Vancouver Island, which gives members the opportunity to compete in other locations. For example, the 2009 North Americans are in Los Angeles in August.
