2024 North American Championships Report

The 2024 North American Championships were held in Cowichan Bay on Vancouver Island this year on the August long weekend, and sailed in perfect conditions of 8-14 knots of breeze.

Mike George of Los Angeles on "All In" put on a master class in speed and tactics to top the competitive fleet of 21 boats, with RVYC's Michael Clements and Team (Adrienne Mennell - RVYC, Alan Barnes, Colin Gilbert) on "Too Wicked" in 2nd overall and Bob Britten/Jose Grandizo of Royal Vic YC on "No Worries" in 3rd.

This was Mike George's 5th NA's win, and Michael Clements has won it 4 times.

2024 Kitsilano Invitational & M242 BC Championships

This year's event saw 8 Martin 242's attend the sunny and reasonably windy competition. The racing area was in the lower middle of the Bay, which was new to most of the competitors. A premium, as always, was placed on getting good starts and lining out to whatever side of the course was favored.

In an unusual turn of events, even though there was a theoretical huge flood tide that should have existed for most of the racing day, there was in fact a large back-eddy current flowing up the upper-middle-right side of the course all the way to the windward mark. This situation enabled boats to tack early onto port and lift up to the mark, which negated a lot of the otherwise overwhelming urge to hit the beach side.

Michael and Reto had a dogfight in many of the races, employing match racing tactics upwind and down to gain an advantage. In the end Michael prevailed with his Team on Too Wicked (Adrienne Mennell, Alan Barnes, Sheridan MacRae) and the racing was far closer than the results would otherwise suggest.

And of course KYC put on an excellent dinner on Saturday night which was well attended and appreciated. Thanks also go to the excellent Race Committee who did a great job setting good lines and fair courses.

SOLD - #257 White Noise

Victoria, BC - Sold on June 27th, 2024 (via private transaction): White Noise (hull #257) - Marri Todd sold the boat to partners, David and Deb Tolman and Richard Mundell and Sarah Turpie; all in Victoria. With a white hull, White Noise is in good condition and comes with a mostly-completed 2016 Measurement Certificate. Their plan is to ensure the boat is race ready while also prepping it to be kept in the water at RVicYC. The 6th boat of 2024 to change hands and the 72nd in 7.5 years, this brings the active fleet of 242s at RVicYC to 7 (including Ken Holland), along with two more club boats available for those wanting to partake!

Dave and Deb were active in 242s with boat #81 ‘Amore Eel’ from 1995 to 2001. They moved over to the Melges 24 class owning #293 Psyclone which is where Richard and Sarah joined as partners in 2018. All 4 of them are long-time sailors in the region. Rich continues to race 505's internationally with and against fellow 242 members, Reto Corfu, Phil Cragg, and Peter Grimm. Sarah is a Canadian team alumni having sailed 470s extensively during the 1992 and 1996 quadrennials.

They plan to be on the 2024 NA's start line in Cowichan Bay on the August long weekend with Rich, Sarah, Paul Mais, and their daughter Samantha all on board. Unfortunately, Dave and Deb are not able to attend this first event but they are looking forward to future racing.

Welcome to the Regional Fleet, Dave, Deb, Sarah, and Rich!!
